Introduction

The goal of this course is to produce a holistic participants equipped in knowledge and skills in agricultural best practices with specialization that will contribute to increased food production and reduced environmental impacts from the agricultural production systems.

The overall objective of this degree program is to produce competent participants in dryland management with adequate knowledge and skills to contribute to increased food security and resilience of communities living in the drylands by strengthening their ability to cope with environmental and socio-economic change.

Course Objectives

At the end of this IRES training course, participants will learn:

  • Participants gained all good agricultural practices
  • Participants achieved how and when should be adapt the application of traditional control methods of insects and pest as well as when it is necessary to be used insecticides and pesticides.
  • Participants to understand cropping systems which is necessary to be cultivated and adapted.
  • During the training participants to be familiar about how to make compost in order to increase their crop production.

Participants learn types of soil and the soil that is suitable for cereal crops such Sorghum and maize.


Course Outline

Module 1

  • Skills towards good agriculture practices
  • Best cropping systems during cultivation of farms

Module 2

  • Factors Affecting Cropping Systems and how to solve them
  • Use of IPM techniques.
  • Natural techniques to minimize harmful insects and pests.

Module 3

  • Treating farm produce diseases.
  •  Selecting seeds which have good quality in terms of germination rate.
  • Cleaning farms from previous farm residues to decrease the impact of insect devastation

Module 4

  • Types of soil and how can be managed the soil fertility
  • Applying fertilizers and the suitable time to be applied.
  • compost and organic fertilizers.

Module 5

  • Seed conservation techniques, treatments and storage.
  • Harvesting techniques and how the post-harvest losses should be reduced.

METHODOLOGY

The instructor led trainings are delivered using a blended learning approach and comprise of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, web-based tutorials and group work. Our facilitators are seasoned industry experts with years of experience, working as professional and trainers in these fields.

All facilitation and course materials will be offered in English. The participants should be reasonably proficient in English.

ACCREDITATION

Upon successful completion of this training, participants will be issued with an Indepth Research Institute (IRES) certificate certified by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA).

TRAINING VENUE

The training will be held at IRES Training Centre. The course fee covers the course tuition, training materials, two break refreshments and lunch.

All participants will additionally cater for their, travel expenses, visa application, insurance, and other personal expenses.
