ABOUT THE TRAINING
This training will offer a set of methods and techniques that use GIS and Remote Sensing for analysis and monitoring of climate change, with applications in climate change impacts and adaptation. Participants’ will also acquire a better understanding of climate change impacts, adaptation measures for freshwater resources, and time series analysis.
The course is targeted at the categories of professional mentioned above who require knowledge and skills on the use of GIS and Remote Sensing in their organizations on Climate Change Impact Analysis and Adaption.
FOR WHOM IS THE TRAINING RELEVANT
The training is tailored for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Impact and Adaptation practitioners, development workers, including officials of national and provincial governments, extension officers, defense forces, emergency services, staff of training institutes, institutions of public administration, national and international NGOs, UN agencies and the private sector.
Participants should be reasonably proficient in English. It is an advantage, but not a prerequisite, that the participants have prior knowledge in Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Impact and Adaptation. Applicants must live up to Indepth Research Services (IRES) admission criteria.
The class size is limited to 10 participants to ensure that each participants has the opportunity to interact with the facilitator, GIS system and a GPS unit. The training may be cancelled if there are less than five participants.
On completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Evaluate the spatial data requirements in Climate Change Analysis and Adaption
- Assess spatial data availability and understand the importance of Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI), for data sharing by organizations involved in Climate Change Analysis and Adaption
- Apply GIS and RS for designing implementations of large scale early warning systems
- Use participatory GIS (PGIS) at community level
- Use Mobile data gathering techniques
- Design and implement their own GIS projects that integrate remote sensing data, and GPS-based field information
- Have a better understanding of the links of both natural and anthropogenically induced climate change, its impacts, and adaptation and mitigation response options concerning water-related issues
- Acquire advanced knowledge necessary to inform policy makers and stakeholders about the implications for water resources not only of climate change and climate change response options but also of various climate change scenarios and climate change response options, including associated synergies and tradeoffs.

The training is not aimed at any specific GIS and Remote Sensing software products, but will provide a practical, hands-on GIS problem solving, by making use of Free Open Source and commercial GIS Software such as ArcGIS, Quantum GIS, ILWIS,PCRaster, Google Earth, Google MapMaker and Open Data Kit (ODK). The training will be conducted in both plenary and group session with participants taking hands-on activities.
The instructor led trainings are delivered using a blended learning approach and comprises of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, web based tutorials, group work and study visits
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION
All facilitation and course materials will be offered in English. The participants should be reasonably proficient in English.
Upon successful completion of this training, participants will be issued with an Indepth Research Services (IRES) certificate.
TRAINING VENUE AND ACCOMMODATION
The training is residential, and will be held at Sportsview Hotel, Kasarani. Applicants are highly encouraged to stay at the hotel where the training is held. The rooms’ rate is approximately US$ 50 per day. Note this is a negotiated rate between IRES and the Hotel management.
- Alternative I: with accommodation: KES 109,499 or US$ 1,399, Exclusive of VAT (Add 16%)
- Alternative II: without accommodation: KES 79,499, or US$ 1,099, Exclusive of VAT (Add 16%)
The standard course fee of KES 109,499 or US$1,399 covers the course tuition, training materials, accommodation (6), breakfast (5), two break refreshments and lunch everyday during the training, study visits and all dinners. Participants will cater for their own travel expenses, visa application, insurance, and other personal expenses. Participants who wish to seek own accommodation can choose course fee Alternative II of KES 79,499 or US$1,099; Exclusive of VAT (16%), this will only cover for course tuition, training materials and study visits.
HOW TO APPLY
Payment for the all courses includes a registration fee, which is non-refundable, and equals 15% of the total sum of the course fee.
- Participants may cancel attendance 14 days or more prior to the training commencement date.
- No refunds will be made 14 days or less to the training commencement date. However, participants who are unable to attend may opt to attend a similar training at a later date, or send a substitute participant provided the participation criteria have been met.
